What is a Connector?
Community Connectors are volunteers trained to, as the name suggests, connect people to the community. You are probably already connecting others to the community. When you meet someone, you get to know them and introduce them to the community. The Community Connectors Program is making this process more intentional. This will mean more people will be connected, especially those people who may fall between the cracks and not be connected through other means.
How does it work?
People wanting a hand to connect to the community will be referred to a Community Connector, by the Community Connector Co-ordinator. They will then meet together over a cuppa and have a chat. After getting to know each other, the Community Connector will assist the person to become part of the community in whatever way they would like to. This could be by joining the fishing club, a book club or even volunteering for the SES! The possibilities are endless.
Will there be any training?
As a Community Connector you will receive training to improve your Personal Caring Capacity. The skills you will learn will not only help you in your role as a volunteer, but also in your other relationships. You will learn how to listen to others effectively, by listening for meaning; and you will improve your confidence and self worth. You will also receive strategies for healthy self care and stress management.
Community Connectors will receive training, ongoing support and professional development opportunities free of charge.
How much time is involved?
Just a small amount of your time as a Community Connector can make the world of difference to someone. Assisting them to connect can literally change their life. Try not to see this program as just another thing to do which steals your time. This is something you can be involved in regardless of how much time you have. You could invest an afternoon a week or even just your morning tea time, to meeting with someone and assisting them to connect with the community. We understand that your time availability may fluctuate depending on your life circumstances.
